After receiving degrees in Accounting and Data Processing (1986), I began my accounting career in sunny Los Angeles — first as an AP File Clerk with Embassy Home Entertainment, then making my way up to Staff Accountant at Castle Rock Entertainment. These positions gave me valuable career experience, not to mention the opportunity to walk the red carpet with Hollywood’s glitzy elite! I credit much of my West Coast experience and the people I’ve met there with helping me become the person I am today.
In 1993, I headed back to my roots in Wisconsin to continue my education and build my accounting career. While attending college for my B.S. degree in Accounting and Management, I took positions as Accounting Manager for an Engineering firm, then the Faculty Controller at a commercial Window company, followed by Controller for a local custom Cabinet Company. In 1995, I earned my CPA from the State of Wisconsin, passing the entire exam on my very first attempt. In 2003, I started LKM Accounting Services as an answer to the parental need for freedom. And I’ll say that having my children definitely changed my career path for the better! I can honestly say that I love what I do and I find it rewarding to watch a start-up business grow, knowing that in some way, I’ve helped it to grow.
With 30 years’ experience working in the Beauty Industry, Mara found a passion for working with salon/ small business owners and professional salon brands on growing their business. Whether working to create and market a new product or service, or just breathe new life into a current business, Mara specialized as a complete brand development resource. Having worked with top Beauty Industry leaders such as Horst Rechelbacher, Founder of Aveda and Intelligent Nutrients and Rick Goldberg, Founder of Progressive Beauty Enterprises and Brand Architects, Mara was able to learn and grow with the industry elite. In her career, she has worked with such professional salon lines as Aveda, Scruples, American Crew, Redken, Loreal and Intelligent Nutrients and consulted with many of the top celebrity hair stylists like, Ted Gibson, Founder Ted Gibson Salons and Amanda George, Co-Owner Jonathan and George Salons of Beverly Hills. While working with many small businesses one gaping hole stood out, a huge need for the training and sharing of the accounting end of the business. With most owners being very entrepreneurial driven and passionate about what they do, the day to day bookkeeping and accounting needed was being put to the wayside and costing many businesses more money and detrimentally effecting their businesses. So after years of working in marketing, consulting and business development, Mara went back to school to get a degree in accounting with the desire to further help salons and businesses become more sustainable. In 2014 after the death of her mentor Horst, she left Intelligent Nutrients in MN and moved back to WI to be close to family and in the fall of 2014 Mara joined LKM Accounting.
